I like to be prepared, yet am also a minimalist. When it came to packing a hospital bag though, I had some experience. Asher wanted to make an appearance 6 weeks early, but they kept him in there so I was in the hospital for a week prior to having him. The second time around, I knew what things I really valued, so here's what I packed in my hospital bag in preparation for delivering a baby. I packed a suitcase, and while that sounds excessive it's just a lot easier to wheel something in when you're having contractions in the parking lot and your husband is busy looking for his shoes...
For Mom
An outfit to wear going home. Both of my babies were born in warmer months so my going home outfits were flowy dresses.
Button-down nightgown: Easy access for breastfeeding and for the doctor to check up on things, and way more comfortable than a hospital gown.
Pillow and blanket: Yes hopsitals provide these, but it's so much better to have your own. Use a different color than white for your pillowcase so they don't get mixed up with the hospital-issued ones!
Towel: Again, the hopsital provides towels to use after a shower but it's not the same as having your own large, fluffy towel after what will be the greatest shower you've ever taken in your life.
Toiletries: all the necessities, but definitely include your own shampoo and conditioner for that shower. And rosewater spray to feel refreshed at any time!
Extra duffle bag to take home ALL. THE. SUPPLIES. You pay for these and they throw them out when you leave, so don't make it weird. Just take them.
